Membership and first visit experience

I purchased a family membership for the first time during their spring deal. The ordering process online was straightforward, and I received a confirmation email instantly. The membership pack arrived within a week, which was fine. We used it last weekend to visit a manor house and take a self-guided tour. The entry was seamless, just showed our card. I did call customer service beforehand to ask about pre-booking and they were quite helpful, confirming we didn't need to for that specific property. The house was lovely and well-maintained. It's a good way to explore different heritage sites without constant entry fees.

Always a great membership

I've been a member for three years now and just renewed my individual membership. The process was smooth as usual, just a few clicks. I keep coming back because the access to stately homes is unmatched. Always reliable.

Good value, delivery slow

I bought a joint membership last month. The value for money is pretty good for what you get, especially with all the garden entry options. My membership pack took about 8 days to arrive, which felt a bit long. Otherwise, the online house search tool is helpful, and we've already used it a few times.

Easy to sign up

Got an individual membership a couple of weeks ago. It was super easy to do on their website. Wanted to check out some local historic houses. No fuss, really simple experience overall.

Wanted a deal, found one

I was looking for a good deal on a family membership and waited for their Easter offer. Managed to get 5 pounds off, which made a difference. The online sign-up was easy. Felt like a good worth-it purchase, especially since we plan to visit a few places this summer. It felt like I got good value for what I paid.

What's the deal with parking? Is it usually included or do you have to pay extra at most places?

J Josh Moore 4 weeks ago
Parking is almost never included as part of the membership. It's usually managed by the individual property, so you'll often find a separate charge for it, just like if you were paying for a regular ticket.

Yeah, don't expect free parking everywhere. It's up to each house to decide, and many do charge. So factor that into your day out.

do you need to pre-book visits to the houses as a member, or can you just show up?

A Ashley Thompson 3 weeks ago
Most places you can just show your card at the gate. Some might ask for pre-booking for special events or during peak times, especially for tours, so always good to double-check the specific property's website first.

I've never had to pre-book just for general entry with my membership, but for popular garden tours or house specific timed entry slots, sometimes it's recommended or even required. It's usually noted on the house's own site.

Are dogs allowed at most of the Historic Houses properties? Specifically, I'm thinking about garden walks.

J Jacob Parker 1 week ago
It really varies a lot by property. Many gardens are dog-friendly, especially on leads, but very few allow them inside the houses. Always best to check the specific house's website before you go.

Some places are super dog-friendly with designated walking areas, others not so much. I've found most gardens are okay with well-behaved dogs on leads, but you'll almost never get them inside the main buildings. Look up the individual house first, they usually have clear info.

Hey, wondering how long it usually takes for the membership pack to show up after signing up? Thinking about visiting somewhere next weekend.

I Ian Lee 1 week ago
Mine took about a week to arrive. So if you sign up now, you might just get it in time for next weekend, but it could be tight.

Yeah, I think mine was around 5-7 business days. You can usually access some stuff online before the physical pack arrives though, like the directory.

is Historic Houses membership good for a family with younger kids? or is it more for adults?

D Daniel Perez 1 week ago
It can be! Many properties have great grounds and gardens for kids to run around in, and some even have specific trails or events. The houses themselves might be less engaging for very young ones, but older kids often enjoy the history. Look for places with big gardens or activity packs.

I'd say it depends on your kids. My older ones (8+) love exploring the castles and bigger estates. For younger ones, it's more about the gardens and maybe a picnic. They do have family memberships, so it's definitely an option if you pick the right places.
